Joy of the Week - Friendship

Posted on Aug 9th, 2006 by Bobbo : Minstrel of Environment Bobbo
This technically happened last week - Saturday 8.05.2006 - but let's not parse days, hours and minutes :). This entry inspired by Darina and this zaadz pod post.

About six weeks ago, a friend of mine - living in Charlotte, NC - sent  email letting me know he would be "passing through Spokane". He was on his way to Missoula for a visit. He gave me the date of flight - that was it.

It was a delight to hear from him. Our exchange over the past 30 years consisted of a few emails - the most significant following the death of his wife. We had a few brief visits when I traveled back to Iowa. I am also convinced many "cosmic moments" flickered in our shared humanity. We attended the same HS. We studied with the same art teachers at University of Iowa. We listened and learned from the same yoga teacher.

My response to his mail was mi casa, su casa. I heard nothing more.

My external being exhibits a still water presence. However, I am a nervous sort when it comes to future events. Thus my interest in meditation and being here now.  Midweek of his arrival date, I sent him another email - with directions to our home -  and asking confirmation for his stay. Still nothing.

On the morning of his scheduled arrival, an email arrives. "see you tonight. I arrive 7:20 from Phoenix. Renting a car and here's my cell number".

Where do you start? "So-o-o-o, how have you been for the last 30 years"? It matters not although a good long hug is best. We had a joy filled evening - got a bite to eat, shared some wine, some stories, some music. We watched a stunning Sunday sunrise while walking along the beautiful Spokane River.

After our final hug on Sunday morning - I guess it IS a joy for the week of August 6th after all - he said, "There are people in your life who stay the same no matter what."

It is a JOY feel the comfort in connecting with others who touch our lives.

My hope for each of us is to experience the JOY, PEACE and LOVE of lasting friendship.

Shalom -
